Intoducing Keywords!

We’re constantly working on streamlining and drilling into mat data to make finding the things you’re looking for faster and more accurate. That’s why we’ve introduced keywords.

mat keywords

Up until now, we’ve only been able to perform searches based on the description of the mat and the collection that it falls into. With keywords, we’ll have the ability to get even more specific and match similar things giving you the chance to find what you’re looking for with even greater accuracy.

Adding keywords to your mats couldn’t be simpler. There’s a new box on the new mat, re-mat, and edit mat screen that allows you to add up to 10 keywords specific to that particular mat. It’s as simple as typing in a keyword and pressing enter!

edit mat screen

To add keywords to existing mats, you’ll need to go to the edit mat screen for your mats. To do this, simply go to one of your boards and click the “edit” link at the bottom of the mat you wish to edit.

That’s it! Keywords will now so up on all mats that you have added them to. If you see some keywords on a mat, click on them and see what turns up!

Simple Direct Messages

Today we rolled out a small new feature. It’s a very simple (keywords “very” and “simple”) direct messaging system allowing you to further connect with other creatives. Want to tell someone you like their work? Message ‘em! Want to reach out to someone to fill in some project gaps? Message ‘em! Want to discuss how orange really is the new black? You get the idea.

Here’s how it works:

Go to the profile of the person you wish to send a message to and click the “message” button under their profile photo. A new message dialog will pop up. Type your message, click “send!”, and you’re all set.

When someone sends you a message, you’ll receive a notification with a link to your messages page. You can also get to your messages by clicking on the “me” drop-down and then clicking “my messages”.

On the messages page, you can see all your incoming and outgoing messages with a simple reply box underneath each conversation. You can also remove old conversations by clicking the ‘X’ next to the user’s name.

We hope this simple messaging system adds value and helps facilitate connecting with other creatives. As with any new feature, there is the potential for some hiccups. If you experience any, let us know at

Updates & Fixes – Week of November 11th

Hello all! We’ve been working hard recently on some functionality updates and bug fixes to improve the overall experience and stability of the site. You’ll find the list below. We’re also working on some cool new features that we’ll be releasing in the next few months, including some things that will help with moodboard productivity.

The list:

  • Refreshed all profile images from Twitter. Remember, you can refresh your profile image yourself if you’ve changed it on Twitter by going to your edit profile page.
  • Added the ability to move individual mats to a different board. You can edit your mats by visiting the board they are on and clicking the “edit” link below each one. The edit screen now has the option of moving the mat to a different board.
  • Added the ability to deselect an option when sharing new mats to social networks. Previously when adding a mat, if you selected to share to Facebook or Twitter, you could not deselect those options if you changed your mind. Well, now you can!
  • Fixed the settings link in outgoing emails to make sure you’re signed in to the site first.
  • Fixed an issue that affected a couple of browsers where if you were to sign out and then sign back in, the site would load in a popup.

As always, let us know your thoughts about The Matboard by leaving a comment or emailing You can also let us know about any bugs you encounter by emailing Please share any feedback you may have!

Profile Photo Update for Twitter Users

If you’ve signed up to The Matboard using Twitter, you may have noticed your profile photo not showing up correctly recently. The good news is, there is a fix for this now! Simply go to your edit profile page and click the “Refresh From Twitter” button in the profile picture section (example below). That’s it! Your profile photo should now be showing up correctly. We apologize for any inconvenience, and are constantly working on bug fixes and new features. If you spot anything else out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to let us know!

New Features, Streamlined Navigation, Simple Notifications

Over the past few weeks we’ve been getting a lot of great feedback. We’re excited seeing all the great content you’ve been posting and love hearing your thoughts on how the site can improve. Based on your feedback, we’ve just rolled out some brand new features and updates that we think will make the site more user friendly and easier to find the creative things you’re looking for.

If you haven’t noticed already, the entire menu system has been redesigned and rebuilt. This new menu allows more content on the screen at once, giving you the ability to see more of the things you’re looking for with less scrolling. We’ve also made it easier to share The Matboard with friends using the “social” and “share” buttons.

We’ve also streamlined and added collections for even more content options.

the matboard collections

The layout makes it easier to find the collections you’re looking for. Or, you can also click on a collection heading and see everything in that particular category.

Finally, we’ve added an extremely useful notification system.

the matboard notifications

You are now alerted via notification when someone likes, comments, re-mats, or follows you. If you click “See All” you’re taken to a full list of all your notifications for the past seven days. This makes it much easier to connect with other creatives and see which of your mats are getting attention! You also have the ability to customize your notifications by going to “notification settings” in the “me” menu. This includes the ability to select a once a day or weekly notification email.

We hope you find that these new features make it easier to explore, share, and inspire. As always, give us your feedback and keep letting us know how we can improve. More features are on the way!

Updates and Fixes – Week of March 4th

In addition to the creation of the blog this week, where we’ll be updating you with all the latest news and features of The Matboard, we’ll also have a weekly listing of some of the updates and bug fixes we’ve implemented. We’re constantly growing and working on the site to make it the best place for creatives to explore, share, and inspire. We can’t do it without your help though, and in the coming weeks we’ll be putting into place a proper feedback and bug reporting system to make it easier for you to report bugs and for us to gather the information we’ll need to fix them. We’ve gotten a lot of great feedback so far, so keep it coming!

Here are some of the things we’ve fixed/added this week:

  • Added the follow and block buttons to profile pages
  • Fixed an issue where some users were seeing “unknown user” for Matboard emails
  • Upgraded our database infrastructure to alleviate slow load times
  • Fixed some broken board link issues on profile pages
  • Added a mat report option to be able to report images or videos that aren’t working

While bug fixes are cool and all, we have some really amazing new features on the horizon that just might blow your mind and make the creative process even easier. So keep adding and sharing all of your creative work and be on the look out for all the things we have in store!
